Summit Area YMCA receives grant from Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board to support LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA

The Summit Area YMCA today announced that it received a $10,000 grant from the Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board, to support LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a 12-week research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health after having become deconditioned or chronically fatigued from their disease or its treatment.

“Thanks to the generous grant from Overlook Medical Center, we can provide cancer survivors with a space to heal, regain strength, and connect with others on a similar journey,” said the Summit Area YMCA Vice President of Advancement and Marketing Kaitlin Casey. “We’re lucky to not only serve this amazing community together but to amplify our impact through this partnership.”

Overlook Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, is committed to building healthier communities. This commitment extends beyond the exceptional health care delivered in our hospitals, physician offices and facilities. Understanding and supporting the needs of our local communities is a priority for Overlook Medical Center.

Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board, a group of individuals from throughout the communities served by the hospital, the hospital’s Community Health Advisory Committee and the Overlook Medical Center Community Health Department, working with the Atlantic Health System Planning Department, identified priority health needs within the community, using robust data analysis and a community stakeholder survey.

The Community Advisory Board awarded grants to 20 recipient organizations who proposed initiatives that address one or more priority health needs in this Winter 2025 period.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a 12-week program where participants meet twice weekly for 75-minute sessions with certified trainers to customize the program to their individual needs. Participants also receive a free Summit Area YMCA membership for three months.

In addition to the physical components, this program also addresses the emotional and mental aspects of the cancer recovery journey. Our program is purposely designed to be an intimate, small group setting so participants receive the care and attention needed to resume normal daily living. It’s essential that participants gain confidence and independence so that they can rejoin larger community wellness programs after completing LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA.

“We are honored to help support this incredible program,” said Frank Macioce, chair of the Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board. “By working together with organizations like the Summit Area YMCA, we can make a true impact for the better in the lives of our community members.”
