Dentistry has come a long way over the last fifty years in helping people keep their teeth, enjoy a beautiful smile and maintain optimal oral function. Dental Implants have been a major stride forward in all of those respects. Implants have been in use in the dental profession for over fifty years. They are very effective in helping replace missing teeth, restoring smiles and anchoring full and partial dentures.  They are a great way to “grow a new replacement tooth” for one that has been lost.

The cost for implants can vary greatly depending on the degree of difficulty of the case along with any extra procedures necessary such as bone grafts. As far as cost goes implant restorations are moderately more expensive than crown restorations.

It is important to have your dentist go through your treatment carefully and list all procedures so that it is clear to you what the whole treatment will cost. The key factor for placing implants is having adequate bone in the jaw to receive the implant and make it secure. If needed a bone graft can be added to the jaw to increase the amount of bone and improve the prognosis for an implant to last for many years.

Most times the placement of an implant involves a relatively simple surgery that does not have more than minor soreness over the following few days. Implants can be used to anchor a removable denture by providing a “snap attachment” on the implant in the mouth that will hold the denture in place much more securely than a denture that has no such attachment.

Another procedure that has been publicized is an “all on four” prosthesis. This process replaces an entire upper or lower arch of teeth by placing a full arch tooth prosthesis onto four or more implants and securing that prosthesis with screws that attach it to the implants making it non removable by the patient and very secure and comfortable to chew with.
