The Town Book Store Turns 90 New Owner, Lisa Schwartz, Realizes Life-Long Dream
Big brands Victoria’s Secret, Williams-Sonoma, and Coach came and went, but the Town Book Store has served the Westfield community for 90 years come September 4th.
“Reading has always been a vital part of my life,” said Lisa Schwartz, 54, who bought the store in April after working there since 2019. “When the opportunity to buy the store presented itself, I didn’t hesitate and now we are deep in the planning stages to honor the nine decades that the store has anchored the Westfield community. We’re really proud and ready to party! Watch our Instagram for details.”
Under Schwartz’s ownership, patrons can expect the same level of personal service that the store has always provided: book recommendations from knowledgeable booksellers, gift wrapping, special orders, gift certificates and book club incentives. “I’m not here to reinvent the wheel, but I might rotate the tires a bit,” she said with a smile.
The Town Book Store was started by Ester Nichols and Matilda McLean on September 4th, 1934 and continuously run by eight different owners. Many Westfield residents count on the Town Book Store to be there for them.
“It’s wonderful to have an independent bookstore in town. They know their customers’ names and preferences and have events with local authors. A place one comes to read, relax, and browse. A perfect location to purchase gifts or gift cards for our friends. We love to promote reading in our family and a trip to this lovely and warm place for new books is always a special treat,” said Michael Krupnick, a Westfield resident.
There will be a number of events and promotions to celebrate the anniversary starting on September 4th. For the entire month, when patrons spend ninety dollars or more they will receive a TBS tote bag or mug for free, while supplies last.
On September 5th, the store will host its first anniversary event, a Book Lovers Mixer from 6-7:30pm. It is open to the public and Schwartz invites all local business owners to attend. Refreshments and plenty of bookish conversation will be served.
Schwartz is also planning to partner with other Westfield businesses to create engaging events for residents and visitors alike. The first collaboration will be on September 29th, a poetry event and open house with the Wallitsch Art Gallery, located in the same building as the bookstore. More details for that event coming soon. In the meantime, art by Shirley Wallitsch is on display and for sale at the bookstore.
The Town Book Store is located at 270 East Broad Street in downtown Westfield. Follow on Facebook and Instagram for up-to-date promotions and events.
