Westfield Memorial Library helps celebrate all that January honors

Outreach Manager

January has always been known as a time of new beginnings, but it’s also a month that celebrates other important events and anniversaries. For example, January is International Creativity Month, established to remind individuals and organizations around the globe to capitalize on the power of creativity and innovation, now so vital for personal and business success in a time of constant change.

A search of the library catalog, simply using the word “creativity,” yields hundreds of titles in book,
ebook and even audiobook format. And if you’re looking for hands-on creative activities, you must head straight to Creativebug.com, our online collection of thousands of art and craft videos.

January is also National Mentoring Month, some of whose goals include raising awareness of mentoring in its various forms and recruiting individuals to mentor.

Did one of your resolutions for 2024 include volunteering or mentoring? Again, we have an excellent selection of ebooks and books, as well as librarians who can help you find strategies and local opportunities to mentor a young person, or even a new employee at your place of employment. And don’t forget to log in to LinkedIn Learning, which has over 75 courses on coaching and mentoring.

Another important anniversary occurs on January 1: it’s the date that Ellis Island opened in 1892. Over the years more than 20 million individuals passed through its gates. Subsequently it served as a Coast Guard Station, a national park and reopened as a museum in 1990. You can learn more by watching our DVDs or reading any of our many ebooks and books.

If Ellis Island makes you think about your genealogy, don’t forget that you can use HeritageQuest.com with your library card or consult Ancestry.com (within the library).

However you choose to celebrate January, your library can help!

Stop by the library at 550 East Broad Street, visit our website at www.wmlnj.org and see how we can make January even better.
