“FALL” IN LOVE WITH NATURE AT REEVES-REED ARBO-RETUM
Reeves-Reed Arboretum is offering a variety of nature programs this fall that are fun and interesting for all ages! Wellness, the arts, gardening, and horticulture, as well as volunteer opportunities abound at this 13.5-acre non-profit public garden in Summit. Check out what’s coming up and “Fall” in love with nature!
FOR KIDS
Homeschool Adventures returns, offering children ages 5-12 the opportunity to make discoveries on hikes, meet new friends, and learn new outdoor skills. (Fridays, 1pm, beginning 9/8)
BOLD Arts is a creative dance and music experience for children in K-5th grade, inspired by nature and the beautiful surroundings of the Arboretum. Participants are encouraged to register for all 8 classes, which will culminate in a performance created by the children. (Fridays, 4 pm, beginning 9/8)
Little Wonders and Oaks & Acorns allows toddlers and preschoolers with an adult to engage in active nature play designed to stimulate your child’s curiosity and sense of wonder. Each week offers different stories, crafts, and sensory activities, along with nature walks. (Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning 9/13)
Arboretum Afternoons for children ages 5-8, gives kids the chance to get outside and explore nature after a long school day. There’s a different fascinating focus each week. Stories, hikes, themed games, experiments, and one-of-a-kind art projects are all part of the fun. (Thursdays, 4 pm, beginning 9/13)
Let’s Get Growing gardening workshops for children ages 5-10 will engage children in different hands-on gardening projects in the square foot garden. (Saturdays 9/16, 10/7, 10/28, 9:30 am)
FOR ADULTS
Protect your garden! Deer Abatement 101 will feature deer expert Peter Aquilina who will introduce you to innovative solutions for protecting your landscape. (Saturday 9/6, 9:30 am, onsite and virtual)
Join certified therapy guide, Rich Collins, for Forest Bathing, a unique meditation experience that is not simply a walk in the woods. Participants will engage in a clearly defined sequence of guided events that will benefit both physical and mental wellbeing. (Sunday 9/10, Saturday 10/14, 9:30 am)
Enjoy the Arboretum’s final garden concert of 2023, One Fine Tapestry: A Carole King Tribute, with this special performance by Gerard and Diane Barros featuring Carole King’s own hits, as well as a selection of chart toppers she composed for popular artists including the Drifters, Beatles, Shirelles, James Taylor and more. (Wednesday, 9/13, 6pm; grounds open at 5 pm to picnic before the concert!)
Don’t miss Nature Photography, a smartphone workshop led by photographer Lenny McDonald. This class will cover essential photography basics such as composition, settings, and identifying and capturing beautiful pollinators, plants, and insect subjects. (Sunday, 9/17, 3pm)
Take an early fall Garden Walkabout with the Arboretum’s Curatorial Director of Horticulture, John Beirne, who will highlight the Arboretum’s most beautiful and hard-working plants as they reach maturity and peak bloom. The tour will also include early hints of autumn color within the extensive collection of trees and shrubs. (Thursday 9/21, 1:30 pm)
A fun morning of Goat Yoga in the Garden awaits, for adults (and teens age 14+). Relax and recharge with this meditative morning yoga class enhanced with nature’s friendliest yoga partners – goats! (Sunday, 9/24, 10 am)
New to the Arboretum, Fall Awakening is a workshop led by Reiki Master/Meditation Teacher Lisa Batitto, owner of Enlightened Path Healing. This 2-hour workshop offers a guided lower chakra meditation, a powerful Reiki healing circle with intuitive sharing, and more. (Sunday, 9/24, 2 pm)
Wind down your day with a relaxing Full Moon Hike! A stroll through the woodland trails under the moonlight will give you the unique opportunity to take in the beauty and peace of the Arboretum as you learn about this month’s full moon and other interesting nighttime facts. (Thursday, 9/28, 7pm)
VOLUNTEERING
The Arboretum welcomes volunteers this fall on Thursdays and Saturdays with their Ground Force sessions. Adults and teens ages 14+, as well as 12–13-year-olds with an adult can assist the Arboretum’s horticulturists in the gardens, on woodland trails, and with other special outdoor tasks. Enjoy the fall weather, meet other volunteers, and have the chance to be a part of caring for this special property!
