Folio Magazine Offers WHS Artists a Great Way to Share Talents

Submitted by Meryl Li

Can you provide a bit of history about your organization?

Folio has been a very popular and influential club throughout the history of WHS. Folio was first created around 1972 and has been thriving ever since. Folio has always been a magazine that offered the artists of WHS to share their talent, whether it be paintings, photographs, or literature!

How long have you been with this organization?

I joined FOLIO last year.

What drew you to be part of this group?

Responses come from Camille Blaise, WHS Senior and Editor in Chief of Folio.

The first coffeehouse I attended immediately inspired me to apply to Folio. The minute I walked into the Halloween themed room of performers, I felt accepted in the environment. Although we can appreciate the efforts that WHS makes towards inclusivity, it is no secret that our school is sports-dominated. As a poet myself, I often felt ostracized from the general community of the high school. Folio quickly became a community for me, a place where I felt I could fit in.

What types of tasks do you perform?

Folio hosts coffeehouses a few times a year which are usually affiliated with a holiday or a random theme, like space cowboy. These coffeehouses are not Folio member exclusive, as anyone can perform for our audience. Our coffeehouses offer a safe space where poets and musicians can perform. In addition to the coffeehouses, we have a Folio magazine every year. Our club is composed of a group of individuals who are dedicated to the specifics of art and literature and help aid in the selection process of pieces for our magazine.

How can the community help your efforts?

The community can help our efforts by simply supporting Folio! We always appreciate coffeehouse attendance and we always have an abundance of baked goods and drinks. In addition to attending the coffeehouses, we always appreciate magazine submissions, which can be submitted at whsfoliosubmissions@gmail.com. When our magazine comes out this year, we hope that the community can support us through the purchase of it!

How can someone get involved or join?

People can get involved without joining the club at all! By submitting pieces to our magazine, performing, or attending the coffeehouses, anyone would have a chance to see what folio is all about! To join our club next year, WHS members simply have to submit an application in order to be part of the Folio club.
