Don’t let the winter blues get you down!  Reeves-Reed Arboretum, a non-profit public garden in Summit, New Jersey will warm your heart this winter season with their special events, classes, and art exhibits.  They kick off the new year with their annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 16 when the public is invited to make greeting cards from recycled materials.  The homemade cards will be delivered to Essential Workers in the community for Valentine’s Day. This heartwarming volunteer project is great for families with children of all ages!

On Tuesday, January 24, children can come celebrate the Lunar New Year. Crafts and stories commemorating the Year of the Rabbit will be enjoyed along with a nature walk on the grounds.  In February, regular programming returns with Oaks & Acorns on alternating Wednesdays and Arboretum Afternoons on alternating Thursdays.  These nature classes help foster wonder, respect, and love for the natural world especially during the winter months. Nature hikes, stories, and one-of-a-kind craft projects include themes like groundhogs, bird feeding, snow, maple sugaring, and more.

On February 3, families can join the Arboretum’s education staff and help tap the Arboretum’s maple trees for this year’s sap flow.  This great hands-on activity will teach you all about how and why maple trees are tapped this time of year.  And if you want to come in from the cold, check out the Arboretum’s newest art exhibit Imaginature: Children’s Book Art opening February 7 and on view through May 14. The exhibit will feature work by artists Margaret Peot and Giselle Potter. You can meet the artists at the opening reception on Saturday, February 11, from 2-3:30 pm.  The colorful illustrations, woodcuts, and paintings will brighten up any winter afternoon!

Reeves-Reed Arboretum’s grounds are open to the public 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Winter hours are 9 am – 4 pm.  Enjoy winter walks, story trails, bird watching or check out the above listed programs and more at reeves-reedarboretum.org.
