pet of the month

Meet Morgan

Where/why did you get your pet?

Not long after we moved into our current apartment, we decided we wanted to adopt a dog. Mike’s parents have a beagle, so we were looking for beagles or beagle-mixes. We found Mo in around January, 2020, through a rescue group in Arkansas called Last Chance Arkansas. Mo had been found along the side of a highway with her mother and a sibling.

After we did a video “interview” and were approved to adopt Mo, she was transported to New Jersey. Picking her up was a surreal experience. We had to get her at around 2:30am in the morning from the Sheraton Hotel in Parsippany. We did not realize how many dogs were being transported, but when we got there, there was a long line of people each waiting to pick up their dog from the back of a modified tractor trailer. The driver would call out a dog’s name, and then someone would come forward to claim it. There had apparently been a wedding at the hotel that night, so there were a few guests milling around the parking lot whom I imagine were deeply confused by the sight of people being handed puppies off of a truck.

Anything special or unusual about them:
Mo was an unintentional pandemic dog. We picked her up on Friday, March 13, just a few days before the State shut down due to Covid.

What do you like best about your pet:

Mo is boundlessly enthusiastic and has tons of personality. She loves sprinting around the apartment and dog run to show off her speed (sometimes we think she’s part greyhound) and toys. She is also not afraid to let us know when she is annoyed – putting her in her pen usually elicits an audible sigh or groan. It actually sounds weirdly human.

How spoiled is your pet?

Somehow, Mo went from living on the side of a highway to ridiculously spoiled in record time. Our efforts to have her sleep in her crate lasted about two months, before we gave up and let her sleep in the bed. Despite being a terrible sleeping companion (her preferred sleeping position is with all her legs extended outward), she actually grumbles at us if we disturb her sleep.
